Vibratory Excavator Attachments

Aldridge Piling, offer the Dawson EMV70 and EMV300 range of excavator mounted vibrator.  These are purpose built piling vibrators, designed to be excavator mounted.  Unlike vibratory compactors, these have two sets of eccentric weights, producing a purely vertical force.

Overview

  • These are the most common form of piling equipment used in the UK.
  • All units operate at high frequency, the frequency decreasing with vibrator size.
  • High centrifugal forces, up to 40 tonnes, with high amplitudes up to 14.4mm.
  • High power to weight ratio, much higher than vibratory compactors.
  • Ideal for loose granular soils, although less effective in dense cohesive soils.
  • Same unit can drive and extract.
  • Can be mounted onto excavators as small as 5 tonnes.

Advantages

  • Much quieter than air hammers
  • No compressor required
  • Same unit can drive and extract sheets – no modifications required.
  • Slender design can drive between sheets.
  • Fits common excavator sizes.
  • Extremely fast at installing sheets in granular and sandy soils.
  • Low weight, productivity increased through excavator down crowd.
  • Competitive rates, no powerpack duplication.

Disadvantages

  • Single pin linkage – not a rigid connection.
  • Requires a bi-directional supply for clamp – grab circuit.
  • Not always compatible for use with Quick Hitches.
  • Moderate levels of ground vibration – settlement problems can occur.
  • Poor at installing piles into dense or cohesive soils.
  • Limited length of pile that can be driven, due to excavator height restrictions.
  • Sheet damage can occur, if excavator push not controlled.
  • Not typically a fast attachment to fit and therefore can tie-up an excavator, so not suited to work where it needs to be repeatedly disconnected.

Environmental

  • Substantially lower noise than air hammers typically around 94 dBA eq at 10 metres (Arcelor Publication).
  • High efficiency with high forces, yet small equipment.
  • Disturbance through sympathetic vibration of soil and buildings.  Resonance can still occur during start up and shut down.

The table below is a rough guide to vibrator selection in terms of pile type, for other pile types please call APE.
